NOVEMBER
White
Noise and Milk
Ring have been selected for the exhibition Soft Power at
Shanghai Zendai Museum
of Modern Art (Zendai MoMA), China. This exhibition investigates how
'soft power' uniquely reveals and expresses itself in contemporary Asian
art and culture. Curated by Shen Qibin, Binghui Huangfu and Biljana Ciric,
Soft Power will exhibit work by 30 contemporary artists
from 16 countries.
Artists include: Lida Abdul, Chen Chiehjen, Heri Dono, Shilpa Gupta, Ho
Tzu Nyen, Jin Feng, Jitish Kallat, Reena Kallat, Gulnara Kasmalieva &
Muratbek Djumaliev, Will Kwan, Lee Changwon, Owen Leong, Leung Mee Ping,
Liu Guangyun, Yukinori Maeda & Yuki Kimura, Qiu Zhijie, Khaled Sabsabi,
Shen Shaomin, Vasan Sitthiket, Song Dong, Manit Sriwanichpoom, Su Xinping,
Kai Syng Tan, Nan See Tan, Chandraguptha Thenuwara, Tseng Yuchin, Wu Gaozhong,
Mahmoud Yekta.
SEPTEMBER
Owen was selected as a finalist in the Blake
Prize for his lightjet print Ghost
Heart. His work was selected for entry into competition from
over 660 entries across Australia.
JULY - AUGUST
Owen will be holding a major solo exhibition with Ryan
Renshaw, Brisbane. Ryan Renshaw is an innovative commercial gallery
exhibiting contemporary Australian and international art.
JUNE
Two of Owen’s
video works have been included in a major international touring exhibition
Asia-Europa Mediations
scheduled for June 2007. His work will be part of the Asian Attitude:Transit
Forces component to be exhibited at the National Museum of Poznan,
Poland.
Owen Leong and
Shoufay Derz will present a special exhibition project in Melbourne.
Entanglement is a new collaborative video-installation informed by
Garcia Lorca’s notion of duende as a dark creative force. Blending
dark fantasy, parallel worlds, and remote means of communication, Entanglement
creates a shadow realm in which two individuals converge to engage in
a deadly game. Entanglement is an exercise in transcending one’s
own perimeters, where the ultimate aim is to form a link with an other.
Entanglement will be held at Westspace,
Melbourne.
The 2nd
Asian Australian Identities Conference takes place in Melbourne 28
- 30 June 2007. Owen Leong has been invited to be a guest speaker on the
visual arts panel with artists Greg Leong and Savanhdary Vongpoothorn.
The panel will be chaired by writer and curator Christine Clark.
MAY
Owen will be exhibiting new and recent photographs in Synthetic /
Aesthetic at Asia-Australia
Arts Centre, curated by Danielle Johnson. Coinciding with Rosemount
Australia Fashion Week, this exhibition will provide a counterpoint to
the event and challenge existing notions of beauty and physical identity
in Australian society.
Owen has been Highly Commended in the Churchie
National Emerging Art Award. His photograph Hole
was judged winner of the works on paper category.
APRIL
Owen has been shortlisted as a Highly Commended finalist for the RIPE
Art & Australia / ANZ Private Bank Contemporary Art Award. This
award supports emerging professional artists through the publication of
their work on the back cover of Art & Australia, as well as the acquisition
of their work to the Art & Australia collection.
An interview with Owen appears in the April 2007 issue of Nothing
Mag, an online magazine devoted to contemporary art, design and aesthetic
culture.
MARCH
Owen recently held a major solo show of performance videos at Mori
Gallery, Sydney. Coinciding with this exhibition, Owen was featured
in Dazed and Confused
Magazine. A cutting edge British style magazine, Dazed was recently
launched in Australia and New Zealand. The March 2007 issue is available
from 9 March.
JANUARY
Owen's work was recently included in I'll Be Your Mirror. Curated
by David Hancock, this exhibition was an acclaimed component of the 2006
Liverpool Biennial Independents. The exhibition explored portraiture in
the 21st century and included artists Gordon Cheung and Jemima & Dolly.
I'll Be Your Mirror was the inaugural exhibition held at Gallery
Primo Alonso, London.
